Fiona Rough is a Vancouver-based artist and instructor. She holds a BA from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Display + Design diploma from Langara College. A self-taught painter, she is interested in creative constraints and the meditative aspects of regular art-making. Her professional background includes work as a graphic designer, an instructional assistant at Langara College, and an instructional designer at UBC.
Fiona creates playful, colourful still life paintings in acrylics, drawing inspiration from subtle shifts in colour and value found in everyday objects. She works from both life and photographs, exploring themes of food, celebration, and seasonal change. Always experimenting with limited palettes, she enjoys discovering fresh ways to interpret familiar subjects. Her work has been featured in two group shows at THIS Gallery in Chinatown, and she recently held her first solo exhibition at Next Gallery in Mount Pleasant.
As an instructor, Fiona prioritizes joy and process over perfection. She encourages students to follow their curiosity, experiment with new approaches, and embrace mistakes as opportunities for learning. Her classes are designed to foster students’ confidence by making learning fun, engaging and rewarding.
